Vinalhaven Eldercare Services, better known as Eldercare or VES, was built by the hard work and grit of islanders who understood how important it is for our seniors—many of whom spent their lives on Vinalhaven—to be able to stay on the island as they age. We all have relatives or friends who have enjoyed their final years in this cheery and caring environment.
From the beginning Eldercare has operated on the financial margins, with increasing state and federal requirements but no additional funding. We all see how hard the board and volunteers work to keep it going – bottle drives and the summer auction require considerable labor. This fundraising is needed because the income from MaineCare and private pay never cover the expenses.
Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are crucial sources of income for Eldercare residents. The federal government is threatening to cut all these resources. Will our residents no longer be able to stay here? Where will they go?
